Origin
by Jessica Khoury

"Subject 77 is perfect. Everything we could have hoped for and more. Which is exactly why we're wondering what the delay is, Alvez. We need more of them. She's no good to us on her own."
Subject 77...I have a number?    pg. 207

Pia has grown up in a secret laboratory hidden deep in the Amazon rain forest. She was raised by a team of scientists who have created her to be the start of a new immortal race. But on the night of her seventeenth birthday, Pia discovers a hole in the electric fence that surrounds her sterile home--and sneaks outside the compound for the first time in her life.

Free in the jungle, Pia meets Eio, a boy from a nearby village. Together, they embark on a race against time to discover the truth about Pia's origin--a truth with deadly consequences that will change their lives forever.

Origin is a beautifully told, shocking new way to look at an age-old desire: to live forever, no matter the cost.

Piecaken

Makin' the Piecaken:
Apple Pie with White Cake
First you mix the pie ingredients and add them to the pie

Add the top crust

Bake the pie and let it sit overnight (my mistake was baking the pie the same day as the cake since it fell apart!)

Mix the cake ingredients, pour some batter into a springform pan, add the pie, pour the rest of the batter on top

Bake the cake, the timing is longer than you expect; about 1hr 45 min (Tip: Put tinfoil on top with a hole in the middle since the sides bake quicker than the middle)

Let the cake cool and make/add icing

Enjoy!

Shades of Earth
by Beth Revis
Book Three in the Across the Universe Trilogy

Teaser:
"I turn around.
The world is there, on the other side of the glass window.
The world.
Our world." pg. 14

"It was bad enough when we feared the planet. But the planet is an amorphous thing. Fearing it is like fearing nature. It did not want to kill us, it just did, much like a wild animal at hunt.
But to know that there's something specific, sentient, and malicious that's murdering us? Elder's theory about aliens is sounding more and more accurate." pg. 198

Amazon Info:
Amy and Elder have finally left the oppressive walls of the spaceship Godspeed behind. They're ready to start life afresh--to build a home--on Centauri-Earth, the planet that Amy has traveled 25 trillion miles across the universe to experience.

But this new Earth isn't the paradise Amy had been hoping for. There are giant pterodactyl-like birds, purple flowers with mind-numbing toxins, and mysterious, unexplained ruins that hold more secrets than their stone walls first let on. The biggest secret of all? Godspeed's former passengers aren't alone on this planet. And if they're going to stay, they'll have to fight.

Amy and Elder must race to discover who--or what--else is out there if they are to have any hope of saving their struggling colony and building a future together. They will have to look inward to the very core of what makes them human on this, their most harrowing journey yet. Because if the colony collapses? Then everything they have sacrificed--friends, family, life on Earth--will have been for nothing.

FUELED BY LIES.
RULED BY CHAOS.
ALMOST HOME.

Eve & Adam
by Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate

"After a few minutes of hesitation, I click "hands". I don't know why. I tell myself it's because opposable thumbs are so important to Homo sapiens. Tool use and all that. It sounds profound in my head. The face? That's just cosmetics, really. Hands, though, well, hands do things. Hands create." pg. 108-109

Goodreads Info: And girl created boy…

In the beginning, there was an apple—

Just when Eve thinks she will die—not from her injuries, but from boredom—her mother gives her a special project: Create the perfect boy.

Eden by Keary Taylor

Teaser:
"Eden itself might be constantly moving for safety reasons, but the garden was the center, the anchor of which we revolved around." Kindle Location 144

"I pulled the arrow back, holding my breath. Two seconds later the buck stepped into view. The next second it jerked violently, the tip of an arrow appearing in the side of its neck. It took a few staggering steps forward. My arrow was still in my bow." Kindle Location 380

Goodreads Info:
Eve knew the stories of the Fall, of a time before she wandered into the colony of Eden, unable to recall anything but her name. She's seen the aftermath of the technology that infused human DNA with cybernetic matter, able to grow new organs and limbs, how it evolved out of control. The machine took over and the soul vanished. A world quickly losing its humanity isn't just a story to her though. At eighteen, this world is Eve's reality.

In their Fallen world, love feels like a selfish luxury, but not understanding what it is makes it difficult to choose between West, who makes her feel alive but keeps too many secrets, and Avian, who has always been there for her, but is seven years her senior.

The technology wants to spread and it won't stop until there is no new flesh to assimilate. With only two percent of the human population left, mankind is on the brink of extinction. While fighting to keep Eden alive, Eve will discover that being human is about what you will do for those you love, not what your insides may be made of. And even if it gets you killed, love is always what separates them from the Fallen.

The Scorch Trials

Teaser:
"So... it's not a cure? Even though it slows the virus down?"
"Not even close. Just delays the inevitable. The Flare always wins in the end.You lose any chance of being rational, having common sense, having compassion. You lose your humanity." pg. 204

"Teresa didn't hesitate. She wrapped her arms around Thomas's neck, pulling him in. He didn't have enough will to resist. They kissed, but nothing stirred inside Thomas. He felt nothing." pg. 313

Goodreads Info:
Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end. No more puzzles. No more variables. And no more running. Thomas was sure that escape meant he and the Gladers would get their lives back. But no one really knew what sort of life they were going back to.

In the Maze, life was easy. They had food, and shelter, and safety . . . until Teresa triggered the end. In the world outside the Maze, however, the end was triggered long ago.

Burned by sun flares and baked by a new, brutal climate, the earth is a wasteland. Government has disintegrated—and with it, order—and now Cranks, people covered in festering wounds and driven to murderous insanity by the infectious disease known as the Flare, roam the crumbling cities hunting for their next victim . . . and meal.

The Gladers are far from finished with running. Instead of freedom, they find themselves faced with another trial. They must cross the Scorch, the most burned-out section of the world, and arrive at a safe haven in two weeks. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them.

Thomas can only wonder—does he hold the secret of freedom somewhere in his mind? Or will he forever be at the mercy of WICKED?

The Kill Order by James Dashner

Teaser:

"I don't know if you people can understand me," Alec bellowed. "But this is a one-time offer. Get out of our way or we start shooting." pg. 268

"A completely insane man had just charged out of a house, straight at them. What had he been thinking? Was he attacking or begging for help? Were others going to be as bad off? As...crazy? pg. 241

Goodreads Info:
The prequel to the New York Times bestselling Maze Runner series.

Before WICKED was formed, before the Glade was built, before Thomas entered the Maze, sun flares hit the earth and mankind fell to disease.

Mark and Trina were there when it happened, and they survived. But surviving the sun flares was easy compared to what came next. Now a disease of rage and lunacy races across the eastern United States, and there’s something suspicious about its origin. Worse yet, it’s mutating, and all evidence suggests that it will bring humanity to its knees.

Mark and Trina are convinced there’s a way to save those left living from descending into madness. And they’re determined to find it—if they can stay alive. Because in this new, devastated world, every life has a price. And to some, you’re worth more dead than alive.

I already did a teaser from Outpost, but in that post I had just started reading the book. Now that I've finished I wanted to share some other favorite teasers!

Outpost by Ann Aguirre
Razorland Series #2

"I'd just managed to drift off when something roused me. A sound, a smell? I drifted, half wakeful, eyes blurring the dark sky with their slow blinking. Movement nearby reassured me. It should be the guards on watch shifting positions to stay alert, but instead, I had the impression of a dark figure. Shining eyes flickered past, sunken in the ravaged face." Kindle Location 2189

and

"The Huntress in me respected his choice, but the girl wept endlessly inside, mourning the man who died a hero." Kindle Location 3762

Goodreads Info:
Deuce’s whole world has changed. Down below, she was considered an adult. Now, topside in a town called Salvation, she’s a brat in need of training in the eyes of the townsfolk. She doesn’t fit in with the other girls: Deuce only knows how to fight. To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance. Her feelings for Fade haven’t changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore. Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out.

Deuce signs up to serve in the summer patrols—those who make sure the planters can work the fields without danger. It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground. The Freaks have grown smarter. They’re watching. Waiting. Planning. The monsters don’t intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn back the tide.
